Do this first

Wildfires, earthquakes, floods — every disaster is different. Here are suggestions for what to do first.

  1. Check for alerts

Emergency alerts will tell you how to stay safe. If you have a disability or access needs, evacuate early—getting help takes time.

  2. Seek shelter

Call 211 and check news reports for emergency shelters in your area.

  3. Find food

Look for an emergency shelter or local food bank.

  4. Contact a disaster relief service

Call 211, or contact your local emergency services or the Red Cross. In a state of emergency, your area may get a disaster center. This center can help you with all the steps on this page.

  5. Find out if your area is safe to re-enter

Local officials should announce when you can return to your area.

  6. Ask about your utilities

Local officials should tell you when it’s safe to turn on your water, gas, and electricity. If the fire department has them shut off, it’s unsafe to turn them on yourself.
