Acting Governor Newsom’s Statement on Death of Los Angeles Firefighter

SACRAMENTO – Acting Governor Gavin Newsom issued the following statement on the death of Los Angeles Firefighter Kelly Wong today:

“Jennifer and I mourn the loss of Firefighter Kelly Wong, and offer our heartfelt condolences to his family, colleagues, and friends. The ultimate sacrifice in the line of public service of this young father, husband, and son is felt with tremendous sorrow. The courage, dedication, and risks shouldered by California’s firefighters cannot be understated, nor forgotten.”

LAFD Firefighter Kelly Wong, 29, died this morning following a training accident over the weekend. The two-year veteran of the Los Angeles Fire Department is survived by his wife, infant son, and mother.

In honor of Firefighter Wong, Lieutenant Governor Newsom, acting as Governor of California pursuant to section 12059 of the California Government Code, ordered Capitol flags to be flown at half-staff.
