SACRAMENTO – Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. today announced the following appointments:
Deborah Hoffman, 51, of Sacramento, has been appointed undersecretary at the California Business, Consumer Services and Housing Agency effective June 1, 2017. She has served as a deputy press secretary in the Office of Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. since 2015. Hoffman served as assistant secretary of public and employee communication at the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation from 2012 to 2015. She served as deputy secretary for communications and external affairs at the California Environmental Protection Agency from 2011 to 2012 and as communications director in the Office of California State Senator Fran Pavley from 2009 to 2011. Hoffman was a news reporter at KXTV from 1995 to 2009 and at KRNV-TV from 1993 to 1995. This position does not require Senate confirmation and the compensation is $169,500. Hoffman is registered without party preference.
Ali Bay, 44, of Sacramento, has been appointed deputy press secretary in the Office of Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. effective June 1, 2017. She has served as deputy director at the California Department of Public Health, Office of Public Affairs since 2016. Bay served as press secretary in the Office of California State Senator Mark Leno from 2008 to 2016. She was communications manager at Equality California from 2006 to 2008, a reporter and photographer at Capital Press Ag Weekly from 1999 to 2006 and an independent writer and photographer from 1995 to 2006. Bay was a Spanish language instructor at C.K. McClatchy High School from 1997 to 1998 and an editor at Musico Pro Recording Magazine from 1996 to 1997. This position does not require Senate confirmation and the compensation is $127,008. Bay is a Democrat.
Brian Ferguson, 34, of Sacramento, has been appointed deputy press secretary in the Office of Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. effective June 1, 2017. He has served as deputy director of public affairs at the California Department of General Services since 2013, where he also served as acting deputy director of sustainability from 2014 to 2015. Ferguson was a communications specialist at the California Faculty Association from 2006 to 2013. He was a contributing writer at the Syracuse Post-Standard in 2006 and a writer at the Marin Independent Journal from 2004 to 2005. He earned a Master of Arts degree from the Syracuse University, S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. This position does not require Senate confirmation and the compensation is $118,008. Ferguson is a Democrat.
Monica Hassan, 33, of Lincoln, has been appointed deputy director of public affairs at the California Department of General Services effective June 1, 2017. She has served as director of external affairs at CaliforniaVolunteers since 2014. Hassan served in several positions at the California Department of General Services from 2012 to 2014, including information officer and staff services manager, and was an associate governmental program analyst at the California Employment Development Department from 2009 to 2012. She served in several positions at the California Department of Justice from 2001 to 2008, including research analyst, staff services analyst and business services assistant. Hassan is a liaison for the National Alliance For Law Enforcement Support’s Helping Aid Lost Officers’ Survivors program, a special events volunteer at the Lincoln Police Department and a Community Emergency Response Team member for the Lincoln Fire Department. This position does not require Senate confirmation and the compensation is $91,428. Hassan is registered without party preference.
Gary Serrato, 62, of Fowler, has been reappointed to the California Partnership for the San Joaquin Valley Board of Directors, where he has served since 2014. Serrato has served in several positions at the Fresno Irrigation District since 1986, including general manager and assistant general manager. He served as a member of the Fowler City Council from 1994 to 2002. Serrato is a member of the Kings River Water Association, Friant Water Authority, Fresno County Water Advisory Committee and the Worship Centre Church Board of Directors. This position does not require Senate confirmation and there is no compensation. Serrato is a Democrat.
Denise Hansen, 56, of Hanford, has been reappointed to the 24a District Agricultural Association, Kings Fair Board of Directors, where she has served since 2015. Hansen has been a senior specialty sales representative at Leo Pharmaceuticals Inc. since 2011. This position does not require Senate confirmation and there is no compensation. Hansen is Republican.
John Arellano, 46, of Turlock, has been reappointed to the 38th District Agricultural Association, Stanislaus County Fair Board of Directors, where he has served since 2010. Arellano has been a field representative for the Duarte Nursery since 2002. He is a member of the Turlock Sunrise Rotary. This position does not require Senate confirmation and there is no compensation. Arellano is a Republican.
Jill Bower, 36, of Modesto, has been reappointed to the 38th District Agricultural Association, Stanislaus County Fair Board of Directors, where she has served since 2013. Bower has been editor of the Poultry Post at Foster Farms since 2011, where she was a marketing assistant from 2008 to 2012. She was district sales manager at Dot Foods from 2006 to 2007 and a sales representative at Foster Farms Dairy from 2005 to2006, where she was a marketing manager from 2004 to 2005. This position does not require Senate confirmation and there is no compensation. Bower is a Republican.
