Governor Brown Announces Appointments

SACRAMENTO – Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. today announced the following appointments:

Douglas Faigin, 71, of Marina del Rey, has been reappointed to the California State University Board of Trustees, where he has served since 2012. Faigin has been president at City News Service Inc. since 1985. He was owner and general manager at KBCR Inc. from 1981 to 1985. Faigin was deputy campaign manager for the Brown for Governor Reelection Campaign in 1978 and press secretary for the Brown for Governor Campaign in 1974. He earned a Doctor of Philosophy degree in political science from Claremont Graduate University and a Master of Science degree in journalism from Northwestern University. This position requires Senate confirmation and the compensation is $100 per diem. Faigin is a Democrat.

Thelma Melendez, 58, of Los Angeles, has been reappointed to the California State University Board of Trustees, where she has served since 2016. Melendez has been chief executive officer of educational services at the Los Angeles Unified School District since 2014. She served as chief advisor on education and workforce development in the Los Angeles Mayor’s Office from 2013 to 2014, superintendent at the Santa Ana Unified School District from 2011 to 2013, assistant secretary for elementary and secondary education at the U.S. Department of Education from 2009 to 2011 and superintendent at the Pomona Unified School District from 2006 to 2009. Melendez was program manager at the Stupski Educational Foundation from 2005 to 2006, deputy superintendent and chief academic officer for instructional services at the Pomona Unified School District from 1999 to 2005 and director of school and family initiatives at the Los Angeles Annenberg Metropolitan Project from 1997 to 1999. She earned a Doctor of Philosophy degree in education from the University of Southern California. This position requires Senate confirmation and the compensation is $100 per diem. Melendez is a Democrat.

Castle Redmond, 48, of Oakland, has been appointed to the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. Redmond has been program manager at the California Endowment since 2011. He served as program manager for the Oakland Unified School District from 2002 to 2011. Redmond earned a Juris Doctor degree from the Georgetown University Law Center. This position requires Senate confirmation and there is no compensation. Redmond is a Democrat.

Michael Parks, 39, of Cotati, has been appointed to the 4th District Agricultural Association, Sonoma-Marin Fair Board of Directors. Parks has been an account representative and pest control advisor at the Wilbur Ellis Company since 2013. He was an account representative and pest control advisor at Target Specialty Products from 2001 to 2013. This position does not require Senate confirmation and there is no compensation. Parks is registered without party preference.

Dominic Grossi, 43, of Novato, has been reappointed to the 4th District Agricultural Association, Sonoma-Marin Fair Board of Directors, where he has served since 2010. Grossi has been a partner and owner at George Grossi and Son Dairy since 1995. This position does not require Senate confirmation and there is no compensation. Grossi is registered without party preference.
