Governor Brown Announces Appointments

SACRAMENTO – Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. today announced the following appointments:

Walter Vasquez, 53, of El Cajon, has been appointed to the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training. Vasquez has been chief of police at the La Mesa Police Department since 2015. He served in several positions at the San Diego Police Department from 1986 to 2015, including assistant chief of police, captain and lieutenant. Vasquez is a member of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s National Academy Associates and the San Diego Youth Services Board of Directors. This position requires Senate confirmation and there is no compensation. Vasquez is a Republican.

Araceli Ruano, 45, of Pasadena, has been appointed to the California Horse Racing Board of Directors. Ruano has been a senior advisor at the SFE Group LLC since 2016. She was vice president at Sotheby’s West Coast Trusts and Estates Department from 2014 to 2016. Ruano was senior vice president and director at the Center for American Progress from 2010 to 2013 and chief executive officer at the ALAS Foundation from 2007 to 2009. She was an attorney at Mayer, Brown, Rowe and Maw LLP from 2003 to 2007 and at Manatt, Phelps and Phillips LLP from 2001 to 2003. Ruano was a senior policy advisor for the Gore Presidential Campaign Committee in 2000. She was assistant political director and senior policy advisor to Vice President Al Gore and Second Lady Tipper Gore at the White House from 1993 to 1997. Ruano is a member of the Alliance College-Ready Public Schools Board of Directors, CalArts Board of Trustees and the Roy and Edna Disney-CalArts Theater (REDCAT) Council. Ruano earned a Juris Doctor degree from the University of California, Los Angeles School of Law. This position requires Senate confirmation and the compensation is $100 per diem. Ruano is a Democrat.

Tracey Struble, 51, of Dorris, has been reappointed to the 10a District Agricultural Association, Tulelake-Butte Valley Fair Board of Directors, where she has served since 2015. Struble has been owner and operator at A Royal Touch Event Planning since 2012 and co-owner and operator at Struble Ranch since 2006. She is a member of the Butte Valley High School Booster Club and president of the Butte Valley All Class Reunion. This position does not require Senate confirmation and there is no compensation. Struble is a Republican.
