MEXICO CITY – On the second full day of California’s Trade and Investment Mission to Mexico, Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. and Archbishop of Los Angeles José H. Gomez convened religious and diplomatic leaders from Mexico and Central America for a wide-ranging discussion on immigration reform and the influx of unaccompanied children migrating to the United States.

“I want to thank all the bishops and the ambassadors from Central America who joined in this meeting to discuss this very serious humanitarian challenge,” said Governor Brown. “The problems of the border can’t be solved at the border alone and political divisions will not be a source of solutions.”

Joining the Governor and Archbishop Gomez today were:

First Lady Anne Gust Brown, UC Berkeley Professor Harley Shaiken, Bishop of Cuautitlan Guillermo Ortiz Mondragon, Bishop of Nezahualcóyotl Héctor Luis Morales Sánchez, Bishop of Huehuetenango Álvaro Ramazzini Imeri, Embassy of Guatemala in Mexico ministry counsel Jorge Figueroa, Mexicans and Americans Thinking Together representative Ambassador Enrique Berruga, Mexico’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs Undersecretary for North America Sergio Alcocer Martinez de Castro, Archdiocese of Los Angeles director of government and community relations Andrew Rivas, Executive Secretary of Institutional Relations of the Mexican Episcopal Conference Pablo Jose Pedrazzi Cosío, Fabian Hidalgo of the Mexican Episcopal Conference Migration Committee, Consul General of Mexico in Los Angeles Carlos M. Sada and Archdioceses of San Salvador Immigration Committee director Father Mauro Verzeletti.

Today’s discussion follows Governor Brown’s meetings with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto, Secretary of Foreign Affairs José Antonio Meade Kuribreña, Governor of the State of Mexico Eruviel Ávila, U.S. Ambassador to Mexico E. Anthony Wayne, Secretary of Energy Pedro Joaquín Coldwell and President of the Senate Raúl Cervantes Andrade.
