Governor Brown Announces Appointments

SACRAMENTO – Governor Edmund G. Brown, Jr. today announced the following appointments.

Nick Berardino, 62, of Lake Forest, has been appointed to the 32nd District Agricultural Association, Orange County Fair Board. He has served in multiple positions for the Orange County Employees Association since 1978, including general manager since 2004. This position does not require Senate confirmation and there is no compensation. Berardino is a Democrat.

Kelly Harrington, 47, of Bakersfield, has been appointed associate director of high security and transitional housing with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. Harrington has served as the warden of Kern Valley State Prison since 2008. He served in multiple roles at Wasco State Prison from 1997 to 2008, including chief deputy warden from 2005 to 2008. Harrington served at the California Correctional Institution from 1987 to 1997. This position requires Senate confirmation and the compensation is $135,564. Harrington is a Republican.

Jeremy Smith, 37, of West Sacramento, has been appointed to the Workforce Investment Board. Smith is the deputy legislative director for the State Building and Construction Trades Council where he has served since 2010. Previously, he was a legislative advocate for the California Labor Federation from 2004 to 2010. Smith was legislative director for the Illinois AFL-CIO from 2002 to 2004. He was minority caucus staff for the Illinois Senate Labor and Commerce Committee from 1999 to 2002. This position does not require Senate confirmation and the compensation is $100 per diem. Smith is a Democrat.

Caitlin Snell, 17, of San Diego, has been appointed to the State Board of Education. Snell is an incoming senior at Point Loma High School. She serves as the vice chair for the San Diego Youth Commission and serves as president of her school’s chapter of the national Student2Student Mentoring Program. Snell is a member of the California Scholarship Federation, the Urban League of San Diego County’s Golden Pyramid Scholars, and Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership. This position requires Senate confirmation and there is no compensation. Snell is not yet registered.
